High School Girls Soccer Injuries By Camryn Sterkowitz

In high school girls soccer, there are many injuries. At Hanover, the most common injuries are mostly torn ACLs and concussions. At Hanover the most recent torn ACL involved a strong player who has been out this whole season so far, senior Lexi Gutierrez. Lexi is a senior captain of the high school girls soccer team, and she suffered hers during club season. She says, “I went to plant my foot and I didn’t land flat footed, and I put all my pressure down when my foot wasn’t flat on the ground, and I tore it.” Hanover girls soccer has another problem with concussions. Another senior captain, Christina Shipe, has had a concussion in her high school soccer career. Christina stated, “I got my concussion my freshman year because i got hit in the temple with a girl’s elbow.” Many other injuries happen all the time in high school soccer.

My Favorite Holiday by Matthew Stewart

This the season oh my favorite season fall , which has my favorite holiday thanksgiving! The best reason for Thanksgiving is the food! You can always tell it is Thanksgiving when you walk in and you take a big breath of air and smell the turkey cooking in the oven. I also eat my favorite food of the whole year, my aunt’s pumpkin roll. The second reason why Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday is because of family. Family is a really important to me especially around Thanksgiving because everyone is in a happy and loving mood. I love seeing my relatives from other states when they come in for thanksgiving. The changing of the seasons is also a great reason to love thanksgiving, the leafs are falling and it’s perfect to have a bonfire! The last reason why Thanksgiving is the best holiday is because Christmas is one month away and Black Friday starts the next Friday after Thanksgiving. These are all the reasons why Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday!

The Start by Zach Willson

Should we be sleeping more than the student average of 5-6 hours and start the school day later? This has been a question and a debate that has been ongoing for years now that could change the way that many things work. Many benefits will come from starting school later as well as some negatives. Some of the positive effects would be the added sleep, more time to work, and less absences. The negative effects of this may be school ended later in the day where some students need that time, and people abusing this start time to do mischievous things before school. We should start later because we would have more positives than negatives. Considering all of these factors, I as with many of my student peers would appreciate this start date and put it to good use. What do you think, should we start later?

Cross Country GSSC Meet Preview By Kevin Paszko

As the month of September approaches its end, the boys and girls cross country teams will be entering the latter portion of their season. This time is called the postseason as the meets that take place have more weight to them and they mean more than regular season meets. Both teams have been in training since early June, and they have steadily improved both individually and as a team. So far the boys team has been on an upward trajectory as far as improvement of time, but they have struggled to put together a solid team score. On the other hand, the girls team has shown throughout the season that they are a force to be reckoned with at least within the GSSC. The conference meet takes place at Wheeler High School on September 30th and both teams have historically been unstoppable against the other teams in the conference. However, with the addition of Griffith into the conference, it may throw a monkey wrench into how the team scores usually shake out. The past several years have seen Hanover compete place for place with Wheeler for the team title, while the individual titles have typically been clear-cut going into the race. This year Hanover may struggle to take home a team title on the boys or girls side, but the girls team has the greatest chance. As far as individuals go, Angela Gonzalez and Madeline Kartz certainly have a chance to win, but will have to contend with a few other top runners such as Trinity Austin from Griffith and Hailey Orosz from Wheeler who have finished ahead of Angela and Madeline in races earlier this season. With a season’s best of 15:54 a personal victory looks probable but Wheeler does have two contenders in Hudson Hall and Aiden Hostetler that are certainly fair runners, but haven’t broken 17:00 this fall and may struggle to contend due to it. However the meet ends up shaking out, it is sure to be another interesting edition of the GSSC meet.

Why Writing is the Best Skill to Have by Jess Wiersema

Many students know the agonizing feeling when a teacher assigns an essay. You can already feel your head hurt from trying to squeeze out ideas to reach your point. It is no secret that writing the essay on the ISTEPs is the worst part of the test, but most students and even people beyond school-age fail to acknowledge that writing is definitely a necessary life skill to possess, but us who understand its significance will not leave you in the dark anymore.

Writing Helps You Express Yourself

How many times do you hear yourself or others say “I can’t even,” or, “I don’t know how to put it into words”? Almost every time, it is because they don’t have enough words to express what they really mean, or they don’t know how to properly say what they want to in a correct way others would understand. However, if you are an exceptional writer, you have a more expanded knowledge, and people tend to understand your problem a little more because you are able to weave the words together into a proper explanation. It is easy to be able to understand others when they are speaking, but it is more difficult to be able to speak to others so they understand you.

Writing Can Help You Understand Your Favorite Music Artists

When listening to one of your favorite songs, have you ever heard a lyric and thought to yourself, “what does that even mean?” Many good and well-thought out songs have metaphors or other literary devices in their lyrics, and if you have the skill to write, then you have a higher likelihood of unraveling these tangled words to form a whole new meaning, making the song a hundred times better. Understand your favorite artist better goes along with being able to understand their lyrics better, as a majority of songs are about that writer’s struggles.

Writing Can Help You Intimidate or Impress People

Most people today are afraid of knowledge because it can make a person feel less than others. But some people, however, are impressed with this skill to be able to speak and write clearly and eloquently. And while you may not think speaking and writing go together, they really do. When you are able to write well, you are given the vocabulary and understanding of the parts of speech to be able to speak just as well as you write.

The Enjoyment of Art Class By Xander Hernandez

Many people enjoy drawing and coloring and designing structures. Many people never get the chance to join an art club or class. They may think that people will laugh at their drawings or judge them too harshly. The goals in an art class are to have fun and inspire others to do the same. To take a break and express their feelings into drawings. There is 2D-art and 3D-art. There is obviously more than that but they are close to the basics. Art drawings can be sold for a lot of money, but they need to be really good. You might have that skill. Don’t be afraid to show the world what your abilities are. You may even surprise yourself with your drawing skills.

Poms Team ~ by Andrea Avila

“I love my team,” are the words of the Hanover Central poms coach, Mrs. Coleen Darnell. Thirty four. Thirty four is the number of years coach Darnell has been coaching. Seventeen. Seventeen is the number of times the Poms team has won state over the past thirty-four years under the direction of Coach Darnell. For ten years in row, the poms team won in Miss Dance drill team, 6 state championships, and 1 national title in California. In order to be able to win, we have to work  as a team. In order to be able to win any title or competition the members of the team have to be 100 percent dedicated.  In order for any of this to work, you need to have a coach who dedicates her life to it and needs help along the way because she can not do it all on her own. Coach Becca is in charge of the Junior Varsity team and helps her team improve just like she does for varsity, and she makes sure that the routines are presentable and can be performed or what the team needs to work on. They will work you even when they think you can’t because even if they  only score  in the top 5. Coach Darnell was captain for the Lake Central dance team and Coach Becca was captain for our very own Hanover Central dance team. Tuesday’s through Thursday’s from 3 – 5:30 there is no way we can go out there and perform something if we don’t practice on their own time as well. Win or lose we will always come out i

Boys Soccer Team by Jack Kuiper

When Dillon Koontz was asked how he felt about the team heading towards the end of the year and heading into sectionals, and he said “Very good”. He feels this confident because of all the talent that is on the field. Dan Grunewald has done a good job with his players from last year, and this year the team is 15-9. During practice he has his kids scrimmage, they review game film of their upcoming opponents, and they condition at the end of practice. The team is good right now, and the freshman and sophomore class looks good for the future. The middle school team is also good, so the future is bright for the boys soccer team.

Life Without SRT by Camryn Sterkowitz

Hanover Central has had a handful of significant changes for the students this year, one of which was taking SRT (Student Resource Time) out of the schedule of classes. This has made an impact on many students. I have asked a couple students questions about how they felt since SRT has been removed, and one of the answers I received from sophomore Natalie Novorita was “I hate it so much. I want time to do my homework in school and get the opportunity to ask questions first hand.” Hanover does, however, still give the option of Success, but many students still have parents who have to wake them up in the mornings, so relying on them to go to Success on their own sounds like a dream. Out of the three students who have been interviewed about having no more SRT, all three have said they don’t like the fact that it is not available anymore. In my opinion, I think that removing SRT has many of positives and negatives, but since students have only offered negative things to say, one positive is that students here have more opportunities to receive more credits before graduating. But all around, positives and negatives, removing that time out of the day has had a big change on Hanover students.

Big Changes by Nicole Novorita

There have been many changes at Hanover Central High School this year. Not only with the addition of a seventh hour and no student resource time (SRT), but with the new 1:1 initiative.  To get perspective on this new change, I spoke to our new technology coach, Mrs. Melissa Walley. Her job has changed substantially from last school year to this year as she was the principal at Lincoln Elementary School, and then she switched to the technology coach at Hanover Central High School. As she explained to me, her typical day is mainly focused on working with teachers and helping them learn our new programs like Schoology and GoGuardian.  With this big of a change coming to our small school, there were bound to be some difficulties. When asked what a con of this new initiative was, Walley replied,  “Students without technology experience may struggle as they learn the platform. They need extra support and patience, but they will get there, and it will help them as they learn the tech skills. Teachers are learning to incorporate the devices into their courses. There is a definite learning curve.”  Despite all of the problems people may have, there is always a pro, which in her words is that it is giving students more responsibility, like checking their grades, making sure their assignments are submitted on time and communicating with their teachers.  This drastic of a change will be beneficial to our small school because we haven’t had this nice of technology in years, and it will benefit the staff and students in more ways than one.
