Cross Country GSSC Meet Preview By Kevin Paszko

As the month of September approaches its end, the boys and girls cross country teams will be entering the latter portion of their season. This time is called the postseason as the meets that take place have more weight to them and they mean more than regular season meets. Both teams have been in training since early June, and they have steadily improved both individually and as a team. So far the boys team has been on an upward trajectory as far as improvement of time, but they have struggled to put together a solid team score. On the other hand, the girls team has shown throughout the season that they are a force to be reckoned with at least within the GSSC. The conference meet takes place at Wheeler High School on September 30th and both teams have historically been unstoppable against the other teams in the conference. However, with the addition of Griffith into the conference, it may throw a monkey wrench into how the team scores usually shake out. The past several years have seen Hanover compete place for place with Wheeler for the team title, while the individual titles have typically been clear-cut going into the race. This year Hanover may struggle to take home a team title on the boys or girls side, but the girls team has the greatest chance. As far as individuals go, Angela Gonzalez and Madeline Kartz certainly have a chance to win, but will have to contend with a few other top runners such as Trinity Austin from Griffith and Hailey Orosz from Wheeler who have finished ahead of Angela and Madeline in races earlier this season. With a season’s best of 15:54 a personal victory looks probable but Wheeler does have two contenders in Hudson Hall and Aiden Hostetler that are certainly fair runners, but haven’t broken 17:00 this fall and may struggle to contend due to it. However the meet ends up shaking out, it is sure to be another interesting edition of the GSSC meet.
